Ave Maria Meditations
A community that gets rid of someone—a community that is allowed to, and can, and wants to get rid of someone when he no longer is able to run around as the same attractive or useful member—has thoroughly misunderstood itself.

Fr. Alfred Delp S.J.’s Timeless Message Against Euthanasia (November 2, 1941)

We celebrate All Souls’ Day, and the meaning of that day is the spiritual companionship of human beings and all humanity to each other, all the way beyond the stars. It is not a camaraderie, however, that simply shields man, and acquiesces to everything and permits things to happen. Rather it is a camaraderie among those doing penance and reparation, and having the desire to help one other to attain salvation and perfection.

And we celebrated All Saints’ Day, whose meaning expressed the goal, the interior purpose of man … As I was reading the Gospel for All Saints’ Day and reading the eight repetitions: “Beati estis, blessed are you when…” (Mt. 5:3ff – Sermon on the Mount, Gospel for the Feast of All Saints), I asked the question: What is meant by this word “blessed”? What is meant by this happiness that is promised to people here? … Beati estis – eight times we proclaimed those words to mankind for All Saints’ Day.

This past week I went to see a film here in Munich, a film that, day after day, for weeks now, has been giving people a sermon about human happiness, too. In this film, too, there is much talk of happiness and redemption and the meaning of existence…I am talking about the film, I Accuse.  Many of you will have heard of it. It has do with a happy family life: two people made for each other; an intimate life together; growing together from one success to the next. A happy life and happy atmosphere and happy hearts. And then like a bolt from the blue in the midst of this, comes the wife’s illness, the incurable, progressive paralysis. First of all, the couple’s rebellious reaction and their attempt, by any means possible, to defeat this demon. However, they reach the limits of their strength, and then comes just the right solution: To “let her go”. You cannot do this to a person, cannot let her suffer like that, so you—let her go. This human being dies before bearing out the term of her suffering.

That, too, is a message about happy people. Here, too, a “beatus” is expressed, a beatus, not as a promise, but as an end in itself: Man should be happy and make others happy. When he can no longer do this, then life begins to lose its meaning; and what is meaningless is basically untenable and unjustifiable, and it dies.

Ave Maria Meditations

But the souls of the just are in the hand of God and no torment
shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be
dead and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they
are in peace…chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed
because God tried them and found them worthy of Himself.

July 25th: The Anniversary of a Prophetic Encyclical

Ave Maria Meditations

In our present world where the embracing of intrinsic evils, which are the compromises with the devil, are becoming more and more mainstream and even mandated, a courageous voice spoke out in 1968. He was publicly denounced for this even by some high ranking clergy. Society was warned but did not heed the warning and never has human life become so cheapened and the dignity of a human being so debased. The consequences of the embracing of moral evils has yet to be fully realized. God help us.

ENCYCLICAL LETTER
HUMANAE VITAE

OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF
PAUL VI

some excerpts from the Encyclical Letter which can be found at:

http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/paul_vi/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae_en.html

Honored Brothers and Dear Sons,
Health and Apostolic Benediction.

The transmission of human life is a most serious role in which married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator. It has always been a source of great joy to them, even though it sometimes entails many difficulties and hardships.

The fulfillment of this duty has always posed problems to the conscience of married people, but the recent course of human society and the concomitant changes have provoked new questions. The Church cannot ignore these questions, for they concern matters intimately connected with the life and happiness of human beings.

Blessed Teresa of Sf. Augustine and Companions (1794)

Blessed Teresa and fifteen other Carmelite nuns were guillotined during the “Reign of Terror” of the French Revolution. Two years earlier they had made an Act of Consecration by which they offered themselves as a holocaust to bring peace to the Church and the country.

When they were arrested Sister Henriette exclaimed, “Let us rejoice in the joy of the Lord, that we shall die for our Holy Religion.” As each Sister ascended the guillotine, her companions sang the Veni Creator Spiritus. The normally noisy crowd was strangely silent, and a witness remarked, “They looked as if they were going to their wedding.” Within ten days of their death, the Reign of Terror ended.

Roving Reporter #61 – Peter Wolfgang on religious liberty in CT ( 07min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

We went to the Connecticut State Capitol yesterday to get the scoop on the efforts to protect religious freedom in the face of the impending vote on the same-sex ‘marriage’ bill and Peter Wolfgang of the Family Institute of CT (FIC) generously gave the Roving Reporter and interview. As predicted, the bill passed the Senate and the House but not before having some important amendments attached that at least partially protect foundational liberties thanks to the action of FIC, the Knights of Columbus, the National Organization for Marriage and the 20,000 Connecticut citizens who called their legislators. The Hartford Currant has a full story of some of the secular points but as Peter Wolfgang points out in one of the FIC’s emails:

Make no mistake: The amendment is not perfect and SB 899 itself is the result of an illegitimate court ruling, not the will of the people. … An FIC-supported amendment to require parents be notified before “gay-friendly” curricula are taught in schools and be allowed to “opt out” was defeated in the Senate and the House. Watch for more information on that vote and what you can do about it.

Well, most of the points that FIC and friends pushed for were added to the amendment which had been rejected by the Judiciary Committee a few weeks earlier. A good day for liberty. Deo Gratias!

Fi News – A Long, Sad Day at the CT Capitol

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Ave Maria!

Well, it was a busy day! At about 7am we found out that the Judiciary Committee headed by McDonald and Lawlor (who pushed the anti-Catholic bill sb1098 a couple of weeks ago) had another surprise hearing at 12 noon today. We were not the only ones who were surprised. Even Senators and Representatives in the same committee were surprised. This time it was to be the vote on SB899 which is the legislative codification of the Kerrigan Supreme Court of CT case that brought in same-sex ‘marriage’.  We rushed to put together our live streaming equipment that was in total disarray from our live streaming of the Youth Pro-life Conference on Saturday. We threw everything into the car, including ourselves and headed off to Hartford, an hour away, only to find out that we had to wait another hour while the  committee went into private caucus sessions until 1pm. Although we were caught off guard it seemed that the other side, in favor of the bill, was there in force. We are never out numbered at these events. Seems they got the word and we did not. Funny that! It was the beginning of a difficult, often nauseating day listening to Senators and Representatives squashing every single effort to protect religious liberties (except one) by pummeling those that were proposing very reasonable amendments with thousands of inane questions. The result is that we have about the same protections of our rights to conscientious objections as did Massachusetts where Catholic Charities had to cease their child adoption efforts because the state was forcing them to place kids with same sex couples. Listen to Peter Wolfgang of the Family Institute of CT summarize this disastrous day and how you can help:

News – Calling for the End of the Reign of Error in CT

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

CT Family Org

The Family Institute of Connecticut is calling upon the citizens of this state and all concerned Catholics to join them in their effort to remove State Rep. Lawlor and Sen. McDonald from their Chairmanships of the Judicial Committee after their outrageous affront to the Catholic Church and religious liberty last week with Bill SB 1098 and their unrepentant and unrelenting onslaught of anti-family, anti-life bills this week. From CTFamily.org:

Stop the
Lawlor/McDonald
Reign of Error!

Family Institute of Connecticut Action calls upon Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams and Speaker of the House Christopher Donovan to remove Sen. Andrew McDonald and Rep. Michael Lawlor from their chairmanships of the Judiciary Committee. We call upon our members to click on the link at the bottom of this message to ask the Senate President and the Speaker of the House to remove the co-chairmen of the Judiciary Committee from their chairmanships.

News – Assisted Suicide Self-destructs in Connecticut

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Ding-Dong the suicide bill is dead. Seems Sen. McDonald and Rep. Lawlor are having their difficulties since they tried to destroy the Catholic Church in Connecticut last week. Their pet bill, SB 1138 for assisted suicide, was pulled yesterday after a huge outcry from the citizens of CT. Given this bill was probably one of their key moves in their seemingly relentless crusade for the culture of death, it shows how badly their political health has been damaged. From Senator Michael McLachlan’s blog:

“Death With Dignity” is Dead?

The assisted suicide bill from co-chairs Senator McDonald and Representative Lawlor, scheduled for a public hearing before the Judiciary Committee on March 20th, appears to be dead for this session. The reason for pulling SB1138 off the agenda is reported to be “clerical error.” Read more on his blog

News – CT Judiciary Committee Continues its Suicidal Agenda, Literally

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Ave Maria!

Connecticut Judiciary Committee can’t seem to take a hint. Now they’ve introduced Bill 1138 for Euthanasia!! Have they totally lost their minds in Hartford??!!! Let me guess … Lawlor and McDonald. They’re the only ones with the gall to do this. If I read their site correctly, the hearing will be on Friday, March 20th 10am in LOB Room 2D.

Live from CT Capitol Bill 1098, Or is it Really about Bill 899?

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
Ave Maria! Some testing on and off until 11am, start of main broadcast. Keep the Prayers going!

Take note! If you wonder why such a crazy bill has been introduced, it is widely rumored that it is to distract the attention of the Church and pro family groups from another bill, SB 899, that codifies into law the CT Supreme Court Kerrigan Case that instituted same sex ‘marriage’ in Connecticut. At issue there is the lack of any conscientious objection clauses in the bill and so it directly effects religious liberty and is much more likely to pass. So the emphasis of today will be to keep the Republicans and all citizens focused on SB 899.

Broadcast ended Ave Maria! See post above for more.

Air Maria News #1 – Brian Brown defends traditional marriage >>> Play

[This is a re-post of an earlier video from April 2007 which has Rep. Michael Lawlor grilling Brian Brown, then Executive Director of CT Family Institute (it starts at 4:22). Lawlor, along with Andrew McDonald, is the one who recently introduced Bill #1098 that directly and brazenly attacks the authority of Catholic bishops and pastors in the state of Connecticut. In this video they debate the Same Sex Marriage bill also introduced by Lawlor and McDonald. It gives a good look at the persistent drive of Lawlor (a self-proclaimed homosexual) in trying to pin the "bigotry" label on Brian and the Catholic Church merely for opposing gay marriage. The bill died in committee so there is good reason to believe that Bishop Lori has it right when he says this bill is "a thinly-veiled attempt to silence the Catholic Church" in regard to opposing things like same sex marriage. See our post below.

Brian Brown has since moved on to the the National Organization for Marriage where he spearheaded Proposition 8 against Gay Marriage in California.]
