Ave Maria!

Father preaches today on the life of Blessed Baptista Varani (1459-1517), a Franciscan Poor Clare who encouraged us to strive to do everything for the love of God. So let us keep our mind fixed always on God, whether or not our feelings nurture or hinder our faith. Hillare Belloc once gave a sharp analogy on how faith is the assent of the intelligence and of the will, with or without “good feelings??:

If the Ordnance Map tells us that it is 11 miles to Wookey Hole then, my mood of lassitude as I walk through the rain at night makes it feel like 30…I use the Will and say ‘No. My intelligence has been convinced and I compel myself to use it against my mood. It is 11 and though I feel in the depths of my being to have gone 20 miles and more, I know it is not yet 11 I have gone.’

Ave Maria!

In his brief homily, Fr. Joachim reflects on today’s reading from the book of Sirach: ??For the LORD is one who always repays, and he will give back to you sevenfold.?? Fr. notes that in the Jewish mentality, seven was the number of perfection. What could be more perfect than God’s generosity towards His creation? Though we may not see or always experience His generosity, everything that God places in our path is intended for our eternal good and our eternal glory – God’s glory and mine – if we trust Him and entrust ourselves to Mary Immaculate, our New Eve and Mother. If it weren’t for trials, what would become of our prayer life?

Sr. Marie-Andre, SCMC – Mary Mother of Life: Psalm 74

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Even in the New American version (better in New Jerusalem), do you think that the plaintive cry of the psalmist urges on our pro-life/loving pursuit of truth, efforts? I invite you to read and pray it with me. Do you have a favorite pro-life psalm? Today is the (rather new-Post Vatican II) feast of Our Lady, Mother of the Church–our congregation’s patronal feast day. Let us invoke her for the Church.

Ave Maria!

St. Paul speaks of the “mystery of His will”, God’s “eternal purpose”, which is accomplished in the “fullness of time.” What is this mystery? What is God’s eternal plan–the ‘blueprint’ He has before He begins to create? Why does St. Paul speak of the moment of the Incarnation of the Word as “the fullness of time”? Fr. Maximilian, referring to St. Maximus the Confessor, a prominent Greek Father of the Church (d.662), unravels the “mystery”.

Homilies #83 – Friday Easter Homily by Fr. Elias, F.I. (8min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

The Holy Spirit is the spirit of love, of truth, and of martyrdom. All the martyrs gave witness to Christ, and it was the Holy Spirit that gave them the inspiration and the strength to make their confessions. In today’s homily, Fr. Elias discusses this and he also discusses the special relationship that the Holy Spirit has with the Vicar of Christ, the Pope, who is the principal governor and teacher of the Faith. Father Elias tells us that the Holy Father is not just the shepherd and teacher of the Catholic Church, he is the shepherd and the teacher of the whole world because he is Christ’s representative on earth.

Ave Maria!

Today the Franciscans of the Immaculate celebrate the dedication of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi:

Pope Gregory IX laid the first stone of the Lower Basilica the day after the canonisation of St Francis, on July 17th 1228. Two years later the saint’s body, that had been resting in the church of San Giorgio (the future church of St Claire’s) was brought here in secret for fear of looting by tomb raiders and buried in the unfinished church.

The FI news team covered the pro Marriage Rally held at the Connecticut State Capital yesterday Morning which was organized by the Family Institute of CT. Over 300 people took time off work to give support for keeping the traditional definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman. This is in spite of the fact that the bill to redefine marriage had already been defeated! The pro gay marriage group also had a gathering at the same time and only turned out about 16 people! This rally of families on a gloriously beautiful spring day was a great celebration of the defeat of this bill, and sent a powerful pro family message to the CT legislature and to National and State legislatures across the US. But prayers are still needed.

Homilies #81 – Tuesday Easter Homily by Fr. Elias, F.I. (8min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Recently, Pope Benedict XVI stated that the scene of the apostles in the upper room in prayer with Our Lady is the model for the Church in every age. It was in that room that the apostles received the seal and power of the Holy Spirit. In today’s homily, Fr. Elias discusses how we can be predisposed to the receiving and using the gifts of the Spirit of God, and he takes much of his material from a book on the Holy Spirit written by Italian priest Don Dolindo, a work soon to be translated and published by the Academy of the Immaculate. Don Dolindo insisted that practicing the moral virtues was the foundation for cultivating the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and he wrote that Our Lady was moved solely by the Holy Spirit, solely by the love of God. We cannot claim such a grace because we were not immaculately conceived, but we can plead with Our Lady to open our hearts so that we can receive the fullness of the Spirit that God desires us to possess. Homilies #80 – MIM Sunday Homily by Fr. Angelo (17min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

In this homily, Fr. Angelo reflects on the period between the Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Our Lord left this earth, and yet He promised not to leave: “I will not leave you as orphans.?? He left in order to fulfill the promise that He would send the Holy Spirit upon His apostles so they could remember and understand all His teachings. Before Pentecost, the disciples were weak and cowardly in faith; after, they were bold and courageous. We must not cling to Our Lord as Mary Magdalene did, which was in a natural, sentimental way. We must cling to His words and His commandments. This is the bottom line of being a disciple of Christ.

Our Lord ascended to heaven, yet still remains with us in the Blessed Sacrament, and the joy of God’s grace in our soul will carry us through every inconvenience, every uncertainly, and every misfortune, as it did the apostles after Pentecost.

Sr. Marie-Andre, SCMC – Mary Mother of Life – Pro-Life Victory

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Ave Maria!

Hello-Hola-Bonjour-Buon Giorno, etc. Do you believe that the U.S. can have a pro-life victory this year (or sooner) and spread the good news throughout the world, through pro-life media reform? I do. The Friars are working for this, too. How do I connect with them? The Franciscans of the Immaculate offer Holy Mass at our Motherhouse (www.sistersofcharity.com) and, as you can see, we still work together. I teach Spanish at our all girls’ high school (www.ahfbaltic.org); “direct” the drama–we will do the musical Oliver! this fall; and–joy of joys–moderate our pro-life club, which the students named T.O.P.-Life Club. They have posted wonderful highway billboards in Southeastern Connecticut in the pro-life fight and we now host Pro-Life Coffee Houses to help fund the billboards. (more…)
