The Rich Young Man’s Quest for Eternal Life – Aug 17 – Homily – Fr Michael

Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI gives the homily on how true eternal life and perfection, exemplified by the rich young man's encounter with Jesus, demand a supernatural "poverty of spirit" and detachment from worldly possessions, which, though impossible by human effort alone, is made possible through God's grace.
The homily explores the rich young man's encounter with Jesus, highlighting a crucial distinction: the young man, under the Old Covenant, sought eternal life through the natural law. Jesus initially responded with the commandments (e.g., "You shall not kill", etc.), which, though written on human hearts, became a source of condemnation due to human weakness. They lacked the "new life principle" of grace, imparted through sacraments like Baptism, which elevates human nature to a supernatural life.
While observing the commandments is a baseline, the rich young man still felt a lack, seeking deeper union with God. Jesus then called him to perfection: "If you wish to be perfect, go. Sell what you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven" (Matthew 19:21). This command signifies divesting from earthly attachments that obstruct union with God and embracing sacrifice. The rich young man, however, went away sad, unable to let go of his possessions, lacking the "poverty of spirit" Jesus sought.
The apostles were astonished, hearing Jesus declare it "easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 19:24). Jesus clarified, "With man, it is impossible, but for God, all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26). This emphasizes that God provides the grace. True "poverty of spirit" is not literal destitution but a lack of attachment to worldly things, enabling us to operate on a supernatural principle where Christ lives in us, going beyond natural virtues to love even our enemies.
