St. John the Baptist: Sanctified in His Mother’s Womb – Jun 24 – Homily – Fr Michael

Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI gives the homily on June 24, 2026, on how St. John the Baptist, uniquely sanctified in the womb, served as the humble voice preparing the way for Christ, inspiring us to continuous conversion of heart and to reflect Jesus through our actions to receive God's abundant grace.
Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI highlights that St. John the Baptist's birth is one of only three celebrated in the Church, alongside Jesus and Mary, signifying his profound holiness and mission. St. John was uniquely sanctified in his mother Elizabeth's womb upon Mary's greeting, being born in a state of sanctifying grace. Our Lord praised him as the greatest prophet, a voice crying in the wilderness to "Make straight the paths."
St. John exemplified profound humility, always pointing to Christ and declaring, "He must increase, I must decrease." He lived a life of penance in the desert, preparing for Jesus' coming. His baptism was one of preparation and repentance, not sacramental grace.
We are called to emulate St. John by reflecting Jesus through our actions and continuous conversion of heart, disposing ourselves for God's grace. Saints received increased grace through willingness and Holy Communion. St. Pope John Paul II taught three ways to receive Eucharistic grace: Sacrifice, Presence, and Communion Sacraments.
St. Augustine described John as the "voice" carrying the eternal "Word," Jesus, mediating knowledge of Christ. Zechariah's canticle prophesied John would prepare the Lord's way, giving knowledge of salvation and guiding feet into peace, freeing us to worship God without fear. St. John's life culminated in martyrdom, a testimony to truth.
