Mother Church Raising the Dead to New Life – Sep 19 – Homily – Fr Matthias

Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Sep 19, 2023, on how today's Gospel on the account of Jesus' raising of the child from the dead has an allegorical meaning related to devotion to Mary.

St. Ambrose provides an allegorical interpretation of the widow of Nain story, seeing the Church weeping for her children dead in sin but also offering new life through her sacraments of baptism, Eucharist, and confession. Even grave sins can be overcome through the Church.

The Church Fathers connect the Church to Mary, who embodies the Church as a mother, so devotion to her helps overcome sin. Consecration to Mary is the most perfect devotion for this, as she takes possession of our souls, deepens our belonging to her, vanquishes our sins and flaws, and brings us closer to God.
