How Our Lady Teaches Us Perfect Surrender to God – Sep 22 – Homily – Fr Michael

 

Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI, gives the homily on how Mary’s perfect obedience to God's will serves as an example for all Christians to abandon selfish pursuits and allow divine providence to guide their hearts.

Drawing from the Book of Proverbs and the Gospels, Fr. Michael highlights the Blessed Virgin Mary as the supreme model of living in accord with the divine will. Far from dismissing His Mother, Christ paid her the highest compliment: Mary conceived the Word in her heart through her fiat before conceiving Him in her womb (CCC 494). Fr. Michael contrasts Mary’s obedience with human folly. Seeking one's own will or wealth through deceit is like a child futilely chasing fragile bubbles; without a foundation in God, human endeavors inevitably burst. Scripture reminds us that a king's heart is like a stream in the hand of the Lord, illustrating how God's divine providence directs human destiny according to His unstoppable plan (CCC 303). While proud individuals reject instruction, the wise dispose their hearts to receive God’s word, like fertile soil yielding an abundant harvest (Luke 8:15). Quoting Fr. John Hardon, Fr. Michael notes that outward pious acts cannot substitute for actually doing God's will. Living out our baptismal calling requires surrendering our desires to divine guidance, realizing that our hearts remain restless until they rest in God.
