“Living Sacrifice”: The Secret to True Christian Love – Aug 30 – Homily – Fr Bernard

Deeper Dive
The homily contrasts this divine perspective with human thinking, illustrated by St. Peter's rebuke of Jesus' prophecy of suffering, to which Christ responded, "Get behind me, Satan... You are thinking not as God thinks, but as man thinks" (Matthew 16:23). We often echo St. Peter, rebelling against crosses and seeking their removal, rather than embracing them. While it's licit to ask for alleviation, especially for others, God often allows crosses for our sanctification and growth in love.

Embracing these crosses for love of God, in union with prayer and sacramental life, transforms them, making them lighter and leading to a superior, supernatural joy that endures, unlike fleeting worldly satisfaction. The spiritual life, Father emphasizes, requires two "legs": prayer and penance/sacrifice. Self-denial is often the missing element, hindering progress. Our Lady serves as the perfect model, enduring lifelong suffering without rebellion, making it an offering to God, and experiencing the highest joys of true love. We are encouraged to begin by accepting daily crosses and practicing small, hidden renunciations for God's love.
