Embrace the Call to Live a Martyr’s Life – Aug 10 – Homily – Fr Michael

 

Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI, gives the homily on how St. Lawrence, a deacon and martyr, exemplified courageous faith in the face of persecution, calling us to stand up for Christian values against modern immorality and to live a 'martyr's life' through daily witness and by offering our sufferings.

Fr. Michael M celebrates St. Lawrence, a great deacon and martyr from 258 AD, during the reign of Pope Sixtus and Emperor Valerian. Valerian, initially sympathetic, initiated a severe persecution, ordering the arrest and punishment of clergy. Pope Sixtus was martyred, and St. Lawrence, his deacon, wept, asking why he remained. Sixtus prophesied Lawrence would follow in three days.

Valerian, believing the Church held vast riches, commanded Lawrence to present them. Three days later, Lawrence gathered the poor, ill, and infirm, declaring them the Church's true treasures. Enraged, Valerian ordered Lawrence to be publicly roasted alive on a grill. St. Lawrence faced this horrific death with extraordinary courage, even joking with his executioners.

The homily draws parallels to today's 'soft persecution' in the West, characterized by an underlying current of immorality and debauchery that contradicts Christian faith. We are called to emulate St. Lawrence's courage, standing up for our faith and being witnesses of Christ. While we may not face bloody martyrdom, we are called to live a 'martyr's life' – a 'white martyrdom' – by offering our daily trials and sufferings to God. St. Augustine's analogy of God's garden includes 'red flowers' of bloody martyrdom and 'white flowers' of purity, representing different virtues and states of life. We must always be ready, with God's grace, to live our Catholic life, allowing faith and love to overcome fear.
