The Blood of Martyrs: The Seed of Christianity – Jun 30 – Homily – Fr Michael

 

Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI gives the homily, on how the unwavering faith and sacrificial witness of martyrs like Sts. Peter and Paul and Blessed Raymond Lull, who persevered in spreading the Gospel even unto death, serve as the foundational pillars and enduring light for the Church across generations.

Fr. Michael begins by recalling yesterday's Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, early martyrs who, along with countless others, suffered horrific persecutions under Emperor Nero around 64 AD, becoming scapegoats and enduring brutal deaths, including being used as human torches. Their sacrifice, and that of many unnamed Christians, laid the foundation for the Church.

The homily then highlights Blessed Raymond Lull, a Franciscan martyr born in 1234. Initially a wealthy, intelligent counselor to the king, Lull experienced a profound conversion after hearing a sermon on rejecting worldly honors. He felt called to preach and convert Muslims, dedicating years to preparation. He used his wealth to help establish Franciscan colleges for missionary training, learning many languages himself, and spent nine years in secluded prayer and study.

At 80 years old, Lull embarked on his mission to Africa. His first trip resulted in imprisonment, but he was ransomed. Feeling his desired martyrdom was "taken away," he returned. On his second attempt, he was immediately beaten, stoned, and left for dead on the beach, passing away on the return journey to Mallorca in 1315.

Fr. Gauvreau emphasizes that martyrs like Lull are the Church's pillars, unafraid to suffer for truth and spread the Gospel, becoming a "light to the nations." Lull's landing in "Bougie" (French for candle) symbolically underscores his role as a light. Martyrs are Christ's witnesses, demonstrating that God provides strength for His call. Their sacrifice, echoing "If a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it brings forth much fruit," ensures that "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christianity," inspiring future generations to be the Church's light and salt.
