Standing Firm in Faith Through Trials and Good Example – Jun 11 – Homily – Fr Elias

Fr. Elias Mills gives the homily on Jun 11, 2026, reflecting on St. Barnabas and the prophet Elias to show how God encourages His people through the truth, the prophetic sign of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and our own faithful witness to one another.

On the feast of St. Barnabas, we reflect on the grace of encouragement. Known as the "Son of Encouragement," Barnabas built up the early Church by proclaiming the truth and offering a holy example. Similarly, the prophet Elias (Elijah) encouraged the faithful of his day, sometimes through the necessary admonishment of those who had fallen away.

Following his victory over the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elias sent his servant seven times to look over the sea until he saw a small cloud shaped like a man's foot. In Carmelite tradition, this cloud is a prophetic type of the Immaculate Conception and the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Formed from the sea but free of salt, the cloud represents Mary possessing our human nature but remaining free from sin. The foot shape points to Genesis 3:15, where the woman's heel crushes the serpent's head, a victory fulfilled through Mary's cooperation in the Incarnation and at the foot of the cross.

Just as God sent this supernatural sign to encourage Elias, He sends Marian apparitions throughout history to encourage us. We are called to be "sons and daughters of encouragement" to one another. We do this through edification—building up the Church by our steadfast witness, prayer, and faithful attendance at Sunday Mass, which inspires others to remain close to Christ.
