Mary, Mother of the Mystical Body of Christ – May 25 – Homily – Fr Joseph Michael
Views 10
Fr Joseph Michael gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on May 25, 2026, explaining how the new feast of Mary Mother of the Church follows Pentecost because she is the mother of both Christ and all members of his Mystical Body.
Father Joseph Michael reflects on the Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, placed by Pope Francis right after Pentecost to highlight her presence with the apostles at the descent of the Holy Spirit, the birthday of the Church. He stresses that Mary is Mother of the Head, Jesus Christ, and Mother of all members of his Mystical Body. Her fiat, her words at Cana to do whatever Jesus says, and her faithful presence at the cross show her perfect love and service. The homily invites the faithful to imitate her dedication so they may become mirrors of her virtues. Pope Saint John Paul II’s deep love for this title is recalled through the mosaic Mater Ecclesiae. The priest concludes by praying for those who gave their lives in military service on Memorial Day, asking God to grant them eternal rest.
