Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Nov 30, 2023, Feast of St Andrew the Apostle, on how we must recognize the Church with its four distinctive marks even when she is disfigured with like Christ was during in His passion.

On the feast of St. Andrew Fr. Matthias reflects on the nature of our Lord's Church, that it is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Matthew 16:18 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/16?18. As Pius XII said, it must also resemble Christ in his Passion. Like Christ, the Church suffers persecutions, insults, and sorrows John 15 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/15. She is disfigured as Christ was, as prophesied in Isaiah 52 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/isaiah/52. Though many are astonished at her appearance, faith recognizes her as Christ's Church.

The Church is one though there are schisms, holy though there is sin, Catholic though most reject her, and apostolic though many prefer lies. Like we recognize the disfigured Christ, we must recognize the disfigured Church as the Bride of Christ Revelation 21 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/revelation/21.

In trying times like now, Our Lady helps us keep faith in Christ and His Church. May she help us recognize, stay in, and love the Church.
