Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Oct 16, 2023, on how St. Margaret Mary Alacoque gave us the modern devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, particularly how to console him during his passion.
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque received the apparitions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, shaping the modern devotion we recognize today. Through her, we learn of our ability to console the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pius XI elaborated on this, explaining that due to the Sacred Heart of Jesus being hypostatically united to His divinity, Jesus, during His earthly life, could foresee mankind's offenses against Him, causing Him immense grief, particularly evident in the Garden of Gethsemane - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/26?36. Yet, He also foresaw the faithful responses to grace, which brought Him consolation. Our every effort to be faithful to grace, overcome sin, practice virtue, and do good consoles Jesus's heart. In the Garden of Gethsemane, the angel sent to console Jesus showed Him our sincere efforts to reciprocate His love. Our present actions, which He foresaw, truly bring Him solace. Let this inspire us to cherish every grace we receive.
