Defenders of Faith, Champions of Mercy: Cornelius & Cyprian – Sep 16 – Homily – Fr Joachim

Views 185

In his homily for the Memorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs (Sep 16, 2023), Fr Joachim Mary Mudd discusses some of the controversies of the early Church in Rome, and the contributions of these two heroes in defending the true Faith against heretics and an anti-Pope. The main internal struggle at that time was over the question of the Church's ability to reconcile apostates who under duress, during the intense persecutions, had sacrificed to pagan idols. The two worked together against the anti-Pope, Novatian, to defend the correct doctrine on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
