Appreciating Sight, Visual & Internal – Jun 01 – Homily – Fr Ignatius

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jun 01, 2023, on how we should appreciate the gift of sight, not only external visual sight that lets us see the glory of God's work of creation but also the interior sight of faith and wisdom.

In the gospel, a blind man asks Jesus to restore his sight. His fervor possibly stems from the numerous miracles he had heard Jesus perform. This eagerness indicates a longing to see again. The corresponding readings in Sirach and the responsorial Psalm applaud God's creation, an everyday miracle we can appreciate through sight.

However, beyond physical sight, spiritual sight holds paramount importance. It's demonstrated when Jesus proclaims, "your faith has saved you." Faith, a divine gift akin to physical sight, enables comprehension of spiritual matters.

Knowledge of the Holy Trinity - Matthew 28:19 - Go and make disciples of all nations - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/28?19 , the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ - John 1:14 - The Word became flesh - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/1?14 , the purity of Blessed Virgin Mary, the existence of angels and saints, spiritual life, Holy Spirit's gifts, virtues, the road to heaven, and eternal life are all discernible through faith.

As we revel in God's creations daily and dwell at this beautiful retreat center, we are reminded of St. Francis, who saw creation as a pathway to contemplate the Creator. This practice brings us closer to spiritual enlightenment. In the Holy Trinity's name, Amen.
