Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on May 17, 2023, the memorial of St. Paschal Baylon, who was a fervent and kind Franciscan lay brother from Villarreal, Spain, celebrated for his intense Eucharistic devotion.

St. Paschal was born on May 16, 1540, and died on May 17, 1592. His life teaches us diligence in action, benevolent intentions, and the power of Eucharistic Devotion.

St. Paschal performed his duties energetically, opposing sloth and laziness. This calls us to question whether we are actively fulfilling our responsibilities. It begins with discerning God's will for us and our love for God and others guiding our actions.

St. Paschal's benevolent intent powered his actions, serving his neighbors out of love. Just doing our duties isn't enough, as the Pharisees' actions without a pure heart showed (Matthew 23:27 - Jesus denounces the Pharisees and scribes - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/23?27). St. Paschal's actions were guided by genuine love and charity.

Lastly, his sanctity was fueled by his ardent love for the Holy Eucharist. This devotion brought him divine graces leading to sanctity. As we approach the National Eucharistic Congress (https://www.eucharisticcongress.org/), let's ask St. Paschal to intercede, rekindling our faith and love for the real presence of our Lord in the blessed sacrament. May St. Paschal pray for us. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
