Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Apr 29, 2023, memorial of St. Catherine of Siena, on her life and works that include deep contemplation, mystical experiences, spiritual direction, works of mercy, peacemaking, advising popes, spiritual writings, and more.

St. Catherine of Siena was born in 1347 and had a profound relationship with God, and performed acts of charity. She had visions of Christ accompanied by three holy apostles. She made a vow of virginity at a young age, facing opposition from her father. Eventually, she joined the Dominican tertiaries and dedicated herself to a life of prayer and solitude. At 21, she began serving her impoverished family and the poor, and her charity was seen as miraculous. She also worked to make peace between enemies and helped the suffering during times of illness. Despite her lack of education, she wrote letters to leaders, urging justice and virtue. She respected the authority of the Church and encouraged the sacred ministers to fulfill their responsibilities with love. St. Catherine's efforts included persuading the Pope to return to Rome from Avignon, and she played a role in mediating peace. She died at the age of 33, leaving behind letters that expressed her love for Christ and her devotion to the crucified Savior. Her masterpiece, the "Dialogue of Divine Providence," depicts Christ as a bridge between heaven and earth. In the Gospel, some disciples abandoned Jesus because they found his teaching about eating his flesh and drinking his blood difficult to understand. Trusting in Christ and following his words, even when they seem challenging, is essential for our spiritual growth and happiness. We should trust him, for he has the words of eternal life.
