Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Apr 28, 2023, where he continues his series on Franciscan Spirituality, focusing today on the primary attribute of God; unlike many other schools of spirituality, St Francis focused on love and on the loving God, which is also his secret to his joy because it focuses on God and not ourselves. Charitas intuition focuses on God as the highest good rather than the highest being, so love is how we grasp the goodness of God. We need to keep focusing on God, avoiding distractions.

Saint Francis emphasized the love of God and praised Him for His attributes, such as being good, loving, wise, patient, and joyful. He urged his followers to act out of love for God. Saint Bonaventure and Duns Scotus, who followed in Francis' footsteps, emphasized the concept of God as the highest good, which is inherently ordered to love. Duns Scotus explained that God's love is not just in His actions but is inherent in His being. Father also draws parallels between God's love and the family, particularly marriage, where the unity of spouses can produce new life, similar to the relationship within the Holy Trinity. Divine love is seen as extending beyond God into creation, with human beings being called to love God and participate in His love. He then concludes by emphasizing the importance of directing our love towards God and avoiding false loves. He encourages seeking the grace to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to recognize Jesus Christ as the revelation of God's love. And we should seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in directing our love to the source of all love and goodness, the Lord our God.
