Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Mar 21, 2023, on the meaning of Jesus' signs and miracles, particularly the healing of the cripple at the Pool of Siloam.

Man at the pool of Siloam, where angels would stir the water and the first to get in would be healed, but he could not get in because he was crippled for 34 years. Jesus heals him on the spot without going into the pool, which is an indication that we can get healing in the New Testament for no further work so long as we have a firm resolve to sin no more.

The command of Jesus to be healed, arise, take up our mat and walk, which he relates to arising from vices to virtues; taking up our mat is like our fleshly desires becoming a burden once we repent that is equivalent to taking up our cross and walking is following Christ with our cross and follow his commandments.

He relates to cleansing water of the pool to the cleansing water that comes from the side of Christ, which is the sacraments that give us healing grace. This stream became a mighty river in time as the Church grew into millions and now a billion souls.

We must, however, be thankful and take some of the burdens of Christ’s cross on ourselves.

Ave Maria!
