Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Mar 10, 2023, on how Franciscan Spirituality, and the rule of the Order itself, are based on living and observing the gospel of Christ. This is a continuation of his series on Franciscan Spirituality.

According to Bonaventure, The first book of God is nature, creation, which should have led us to God

After the fall, creation became as bad as it was good as far as getting to God

So he gave the Bible the second book.

Bible is founded on the Church and should not be read separately from the Church Tim 3:15 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1timothy/3?15

Francis started with scripture which he read and contemplated, and especially the Gospels. He then submitted his plan to the Church.

"The Rule and life of the Friars Minor is this, namely, to observe the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by living in obedience, without property, and in chastity." - https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/library/franciscan-rule-of-1223-11944

Observe the Holy Gospel

Lateran IV - No new rules of orders, but Francis was given an exception

Each new chapter of his rule was based on the Gospel

This was unique to Francis - Our rule is the simplicity of living the Gospel

Fonte Colomba Christ confirms that rule is from Him - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctuary_of_Fonte_Colombo

Francis declined when St Dominic offered to join their orders together

Test of a good spiritual movement is blessed by God and approved by Church

Franciscans enabled the early Church's rebirth through the gospel's simplicity.
