Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Oct 19, 2021, on how the prayer of simplicity is the intermediate step between ascetical and mystical prayer where we do less and God does more.

Notes:

Simple gaze on the Lord no discourse, sweet contemplation, and the Holy Spirit gives what He wants

Much received and little work

Ascetical prayer we do it, we are the driver, Christ is in the passenger seat. With simple prayer switch seats

Ascetical requires grace but mostly our effort

Simple prayer lies on the border between ascetical and mystical prayer, part our effort, part Christ's

How to pray? no specific method.

Meditating on a specific trait of God and this morphs into a simple gaze of the soul on the beauty of God

Sweet rest in God, but wide awake

Should be willing to let go of discursive prayer when given the grace for simple prayer.

But if it does not work, should revert to ascetical

Can have aridity during this as well

Usually does not last long but with practice...can last longer, potentially all day.

While praying this way during vocal prayer focus is more on God and less on the words.

Stepping stone to infused prayer, the next step
