The Life of St. Francis of Assisi, Confessor and Founder (d. 1226) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Oct 4. Francis was born to a rich family in Assisi but not attached to his wealth and eventually renounced it and began embracing the poor and to dress like a poor man and begged for the poor, preaching poverty and penance. After people joined him he called their group the "friars minor" and received approval from the pope. The order grew to thousands and preached even to the Muslims and with ever-growing love was even able to talk to the animals and was then gifted with the marks of the wounds of Christ in his flesh.

Reflection is on the value of poverty as a means of following Christ who forsook his divine kinship to become a poor man even dying on a cross.
The need to forsake ourselves and all created things to find our creator.
We should see the beauty of created things but use them to lift our minds and hearts to God leading all creation to praise the creator.
