The Martyrdom of St. Nicholas Pieck of Gorcum and Eighteen Companions, First Order (d. 1572) for the July 9th Franciscan Saint of the Day. St. Nicholas and his companions were martyred in Gorcum, Holland by Calvinists who objected to their teaching of the Catholic truths of the real presence of Christ in the eucharist and the primacy of Peter in the person of the Pope over the Church.
