Ash Wednesday: Repent Now, You May Not Have Tomorrow – Feb 26 – Homily – Fr Matthias

In the homily for Ash Wednesday (Feb 26, 2020), Fr. Matthias explains the sense of Lenten penance and the urgency of responding now to Our Lord’s call to repentance, conversion, and mercy. Though God’s mercy is unlimited, it is not unconditional; nor is our time to accept His mercy unlimited. We must sincerely repent, turn away from sin, while we have the opportunity—while still in this life—and if we do, we can be sure of receiving mercy and salvation.

Focusing on St. Paul’s exhortation (“Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation,”), Father also draws on the preaching of St. Alphonsus (moral theologian, Bishop and Doctor of the Church) to help us grasp the sense of the urgency of repenting of sin while we have time. “He Who has promised pardon to penitents has not promised tomorrow to sinners” (St. Gregory).
