On the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church (Monday after Pentecost, Jun 10, 2019), Fr. Alan relates the reasons behind the declaration of this new memorial, decreed by Pope Francis in 2018.

“Mother of the Church” is the Marian title proclaimed officially by Pope St. Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council, and expresses the Church’s filial veneration for her mother, the Mother of Christ and of all the members of His Mystical Body. As the Council prayed and yearned for the realization of a “new Pentecost,” the Church now gathers around Mary, just as the Apostles did in the Upper Room before the first Pentecost, awaiting in prayerful vigil the powerful intervention of the Holy Spirit and His gift of the new life of grace.

Ave Maria!
