Aug 02 – Homily – Fr Alan: Christ’s Mercy & the Portiuncula Pardon of Assisi

Views 1149

The incalculable grace of the Portiuncula indulgence, blessed by Jesus and Mary, requested by St. Francis and granted by Pope Honorius III in 1216, is totally compatible with the great mercy of Christ, who even nailed to the Cross pardoned the repentant thief and forgave his executioners. However, such a grace of mercy, obtained through Francis' zeal for salvation of souls, is totally incompatible with any presumption on the part of the unrepentant sinner. Mercy requires contrition; the indulgence requires a sincere sacramental confession and the complete renunciation of and detachment from all sin.

Ave Maria!
