"Honor their authority, but do not follow their example." In today's Gospel, this is how Our Lord instructs us to relate to the Pharisees who worship themselves rather than God. The Pharisees blindly credit themselves for the good that they possess. God is the one who deserves all the credit. He owes us nothing, yet gives us everything, and oftentimes we are harder on ourselves than He is on us. Our Lord is not a cruel taskmaster; He only asks that we take up our cross daily and follow Him as best as we can.
