Our Forgiveness of Others Secures God’s Mercy for Us – Aug 13 – Homily – Fr Dominic

Fr Dominic Murphy Murphy gives the homily, on how Christians are called to unlimited forgiveness, mirroring God's boundless mercy towards us, and that our willingness to forgive others is essential for receiving God's forgiveness ourselves.
Fr. Dominic Murphy Murphy contrasts the Old Testament's escalating vengeance, seen in Cain's sevenfold protection and Lamech's boast of seventyfold retribution (Genesis 4), with the Christian call to unlimited forgiveness. When Peter asked Jesus if he should forgive his neighbor seven times, Jesus replied, "Seventy-seven times" (Matthew 18:21-22), signifying an infinite capacity for mercy.
This radical shift is underscored by the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35). A servant, forgiven an enormous debt by his master, then refused to forgive a fellow servant who owed him a mere fraction, having him imprisoned. Fr. Murphy explains this parable as a reflection of our relationship with God and neighbor: we desire God's forgiveness for our many failings, yet often withhold mercy from others, harboring resentments and grudges.
God's love is infinite, and He desires to forgive us, granting peace, joy, and freedom from past mistakes, but He awaits our repentance. Similarly, we are called to look upon our neighbors with mercy, desiring their good, and praying for their conversion. Forgiveness does not mean condoning wrong actions, but rather forgiving from the heart and praying for the other person. Fr. Murphy stresses that our lack of love and charity prevents us from being like God. He concludes by urging us to pray for a spirit of godliness and an enormous love in our hearts, so that we may forgive an unlimited number of times, ensuring that our own sins will be forgiven by God on Judgment Day.
