Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI gives the homily on how Saint Jane Frances de Chantal's life exemplifies embracing divine providence, practicing radical forgiveness, and living the "white martyrdom" of love through complete submission to God's will in all circumstances.
Saint Jane Frances de Chantal (1571-1641) led an extraordinary life as a wife, mother, and foundress of the Visitation Order. From a young age, she displayed a fiery spirit, once throwing away candy from someone who doubted the Eucharist. After her husband's accidental death, she endured a profound trial of unforgiveness towards the man responsible. Through a gradual process of healing and God's grace, she not only forgave him but eventually became the godmother to one of his children, illustrating the power of overcoming human weakness. She later met Saint Francis de Sales, who became her spiritual director and friend, and together they founded the Visitation Order, which notably accepted women often rejected by other communities due to age or infirmity. Saint Jane's core spirituality centered on divine providence, believing that nothing, whether perceived as good or bad, escapes God's loving plan. She taught her sisters about the "martyrdom of love," or "white martyrdom," a lifelong commitment of yielding oneself fully to God's will, allowing love to "cut off from all that was dearest." This profound, ongoing suffering, she asserted, is as strong as death and leads to true peace and holiness, regardless of one's state in life. It involves offering everything to God, trusting He works through our weaknesses to make us strong, so Christ lives in us.
