God’s Parables to Humble Hearts – Jul 27 – Homily – Fr Michael

Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI gives the homily, on how God uses parables like the mustard seed to illustrate the Kingdom of Heaven's growth from small beginnings, emphasizing that understanding requires humble dispositions and that while we plant the seeds of faith, God provides the miraculous growth, as seen in the evangelization of Mexico.
Fr. Michael discusses how God uses parables, often graphic, to teach, citing examples like Jeremiah's loincloth representing Judah's pride, or a prophet marrying a woman of ill repute to symbolize Israel's idolatry as adultery. The Gospel parables of the mustard seed and yeast illustrate the Kingdom of God's humble beginnings and transformative growth. The mustard seed, initially the smallest, grows into a great tree, while yeast leavens an entire batch of dough. Understanding these truths requires good dispositions, like those of little children, as pride blocks God's wisdom.
The Kingdom of Heaven, embodied by the Church, mirrors this mustard seed growth, starting small and expanding until its completion. A profound historical example is the evangelization of Mexico, where missionaries planted the seed of faith. This seed was miraculously watered by God's grace through Our Lady of Guadalupe's apparition, leading to an unprecedented conversion of 8 to 10 million people in seven to eight years. Priests, though few, baptized over 200 individuals daily. We are called to participate in planting the truth in our culture, but ultimately, God provides the growth. Similarly, in our spiritual lives, patience and trust allow God's truth and grace to grow, bearing fruit in virtues and merits. We should ask for wisdom and a share in God's mission.
