Consoling the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Union with Mary – Jun 05 – Homily – Fr Josemaria

Fr. Josemaria Barbin gives the homily on Jun 05, 2026, encouraging the faithful to console and make reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on this First Friday by receiving Holy Communion with an actual intention in union with the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On this First Friday of June, a day and month traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Father Josemaria Barbin reflects on our profound ability to console and make reparation to the heart of our Lord. While many things in life remain outside of our control, consoling Jesus is entirely possible if we simply will it. Father Barbin recalls our Lord's simple request to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque: to receive Holy Communion in the state of grace with the intention of making reparation to His Most Sacred Heart, particularly on nine consecutive First Fridays.

To offer this reparation in the most pleasing way, Father Barbin recommends practicing this devotion in union with the Blessed Virgin Mary, drawing from Saint Louis de Montfort’s teachings in The True Devotion to Mary. He explains the theological distinction between a "virtual intention"—an intention made previously that still guides our actions unconsciously—and an "actual intention," which is a conscious, active focus in the present moment. Because the reception of Holy Communion is brief, we can easily form an actual intention. Father Barbin urges the faithful to recollect themselves before Communion, renew their consecration to Our Lady, and consciously intend to receive and thank the Lord in union with her. By doing so, we console the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the most beautiful and perfect way possible.
