Responding to the Call of Christ with Speed and Courage – May 28 – Homily – Fr Dominic

Fr Dominic Murphy gives the homily on May 28, 2026, reflecting on the healing of the blind beggar Bartimaeus to illustrate how persistent faith, spiritual sight, and a willingness to struggle draw us closer to Jesus on the path of discipleship.

Fr. Dominic Murphy reflects on the healing of Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52, the blind beggar who sat by the roadside as Jesus journeyed from Jericho to Jerusalem. Despite his physical blindness and the humble origins of "Jesus of Nazareth," Bartimaeus possesses profound faith, recognizing Jesus as the Messiah and "Son of David." When the crowd rebukes him and tells him to be silent, Bartimaeus cries out even louder. Fr. Dominic notes that God blesses those who fight through opposition to do good and seek Him. When Jesus calls him, Bartimaeus immediately throws off his cloak—symbolizing the casting away of his former worldly life—and leaps up to meet Christ. Upon receiving his sight, he immediately follows Jesus "on the way." Fr. Dominic explains that this physical healing represents the spiritual sight we are all called to possess. The physical world acts as a veil, hiding the spiritual reality of God's presence, most perfectly exemplified in the Holy Eucharist. By seeking the intellectual and spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit, we gain the counsel and wisdom needed to recognize God's hand in our daily lives. Like Bartimaeus, we must move quickly and without hesitation to follow Christ, allowing Him to enlighten our path to holiness.
