Mary as Mediatrix of All Graces Always – Mar 16 – Homily – Fr Matthias
Views 16
Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Mar 16, 2026, explaining the Gospel's unusual double reference to the Wedding at Cana to underscore Mary's ongoing role as mediatrix of all graces.
In today's Gospel from John chapter 4, the miracle at Cana is mentioned again after its full description in chapter 2. Father Matthias points out that this rare repetition has a purpose: to remind us of Mary's key role in bringing God's graces to us. Just as she interceded at the wedding for more wine, prompting Jesus' miracle, Mary always mediates graces from God, whether we think of her or not. She's our true spiritual mother. He quotes Pope Francis, pointing to her ancient title as "mediatrix," and Benedict XVI, who says no grace in salvation history bypasses her mediation. Remembering this consoles us and pleases Jesus.
