Forgive to Receive to Forgiveness – Mar 02 – Homily – Fr Matthias

Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Mar 02, 2026, explaining that Jesus teaches, forgiveness is reciprocal, requiring us to acknowledge our hurts, accept our inability to fix them, and entrust their resolution to God, enabling both forgiving and being forgiven.

Father shares how forgiveness works both ways, just as Jesus said: if we forgive others, God forgives us; holding on to grudges blocks our own mercy. To forgive, we first admit we've been hurt and that we can't change the past or erase the pain. Instead of clinging to the wound or getting revenge—which only makes things worse—we let go and hand it over to God. He alone can settle the debts and heal the messes we create or receive. When we hurt someone, we can't fully repair it on our own, so we make reparation but ask God to step in. This trust in God's logic opens the door for true forgiveness in both directions.
