“I have come to set the earth on fire”—what does Jesus really mean?

Fr. Isidore M. Cipres gives the homily from Our Lady's Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time  (Aug 17, 2025), reflecting on Jesus’ words, “I have come to set the earth on fire.” Father reminds us that discipleship often brings challenges, rejection, and even division—but also healing, strength, and joy for those who remain faithful. Drawing lessons from Jeremiah, the Cross, and Our Lady’s example, Fr. Isidore calls us to let Christ’s fire burn in our hearts, to choose truth over comfort, and to trust in God’s unfailing presence.
