Mercy: Jesus Stands Between Our Guilt and Due Punishment – Apr 06 – Homily – Fr Alan
Views 40
Fr. Alan B. Maria Wharton gives the homily from Our Lady's Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for the Fifth Sunday of Lent (Apr 06, 2025), on how Christ, in saving the woman caught in adultery from being stone, demonstrates what he affirmed elsewhere: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill" (Mt. 5:17).
Jesus's mercy wasn't dismissing the law, but fulfilling its intent by leading sinners to repentance, which the prophets had already emphasized as God's desired outcome. As He said through Ezekiel: "Do I find pleasure in the death of the wicked—oracle of the Lord God? Do I not rejoice when they turn from their evil way and live?" Our focus should be on Our Lord's mercy, which is the gift that obtains for us hope of the Resurrection.
Ave Maria!
