God’s Favor Comes with Responsibility – Jul 02 – Homily – Fr Ignatius

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jul 02, 2024, on how great gifts come with great responsibilities, especially for those favored by God, such as Israel and Catholics, who must strive to become saints.

Today's Mass readings highlight that great gifts come with great responsibilities. Amos reminds us that God favored Israel but will punish their sins (Amos 3:2 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/amos/3?2). God gave Israel true faith, knowledge, and protection, freeing them from Egypt (Exodus 14:30 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/exodus/14?30). Therefore, they bear more responsibility. Jesus also taught that much is expected from those given much (Luke 12:48 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/luke/12?48). St. James warned that teachers will be judged more strictly (James 3:1 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/james/3?1).

As God's new people, Catholics have the fullness of faith and sacraments, carrying a greater responsibility to become saints.
