Beyond Expectations, Judas’ Loss, Matthias’ Gain – May 14 – Homily – Fr Matthias

Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on May 14, 2024, feast of St. Matthias, where he emphasizes the dangers of sin, as exemplified by Judas, compared to the unexpected rewards of the faithfulness of St. Matthias.

Judas, despite not foreseeing the full consequences of his betrayal of Jesus, ultimately despaired and lost his apostleship and, it is believed, his soul. Father highlights that sin, even seemingly small deliberate ones, can lead to unforeseen negative outcomes, and nothing is truly gained from sin. In contrast, St. Matthias remained quietly faithful, from Jesus' baptism to His resurrection, and was unexpectedly chosen to replace Judas as one of the Twelve Apostles. This teaches us that God's rewards and graces for our fidelity are often greater than we can anticipate, to the same extent that the consequences of sin exceed expectations.
