Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jun 30, 2023, where he continues his series on Franciscan Spirituality, delving into the triple primacy of Jesus Christ within Franciscan spirituality: primacy of election, of perfection, and of being.

Jesus holds the primacy of election, denoting that God chose Jesus first from all possible beings He could create. In Ephesians 3:11, St. Paul mentions the eternal purpose realized in Christ Jesus, showing Christ as God's primary choice - [Ephesians 3:11 - According to His eternal purpose realized in Christ Jesus our Lord - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/ephesians/3?11].

Next, we explore the primacy of being, which asserts that Jesus is not just first in election, but also first in existence, in being, His ontological primacy. Jesus is the model, the blueprint for all creatures, a concept reflected in Colossians 1:18 - [He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/colossians/1?18].

Lastly, Jesus holds the primacy of perfection, where Jesus embodies the fullness of all perfections. St. Paul speaks of this in Colossians 2:9 - [ For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/colossians/2?9].

In conclusion, Jesus embodies a three-fold primacy: of election, being, and perfection. Let us ask Our Lady for the grace to give Jesus the first place in our lives, as depicted in Sirach 24:20-22 - [My fruit is sweeter than honey, my inheritance than the honeycomb - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/sirach/24?20].
