FS #25: Soul of Franciscan Spirituality, Part 5 – May 08 – Homily – Fr Terrance
Views 422
Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on May 08, 2023, where he continues his series on Franciscan Spirituality, focusing today on how love, the soul of this spirituality, he emphasizes what he said last time that grace is love and vice versa but in light of sacred scripture and the teachings of St. Augustine.
Jesus tells us in John 15:4 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/15?4 to abide in Him, and in John 15:9-10 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/15?9, He explains that abiding in Him means abiding in His love. This divine atmosphere allows us to participate in God's divinity, living in His grace. St. Augustine says that justice, charity, and grace are connected, as discussed in his work De Natura et Gratia (On Nature and Grace) https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1503.htm.
The Franciscan doctors affirm the substantial identity of grace and charity, two aspects of the same gift from God. The essence of grace is charity because God's love is poured out through grace, enabling us to love Him in return. Blessed John Duns Scotus explains that charity makes God dear to us, while grace makes us pleasing to God.
St. John tells us in 1 John 4:10 - https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1john/4?10 that it's necessary for God to first love us, but we must also welcome and reciprocate His love. Grace is both God's loving gift to us and our loving response to Him.
Let's ask Our Lady, the Mother of Grace, to help us understand and embrace the love of God, Jesus, and herself. Praise be Jesus and Mary, now and forever.
Ave Maria!
