Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Apr 18, 2023, on how St. Francis's originality as a most faithful imitator of Christ played out in forming Franciscan Spirituality.

Key idea is that grace builds on nature; it does not override it. So Francis's many unique qualities made him very suited for remedying the spiritual distortions of his times.

There was much negative spirituality in the world of his time; the valid concepts of fighting against the flesh became overdone to the point that all creation was evil. This was part of Martin Luther's excesses.

Francis' natural optimism and love of nature were a good remedy for this. Loving creation in an ordered way will lead us to the Creator.

St Bonaventure in Major legand

Evil is part of original sin, not a part of God's creation

Every creature brings us to God, according to Bonaventure, expressing theologically what Francis lived intuitively

Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si’ - First line is LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”.  - https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/documents/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html

is a quote directly from Francis' Canticle of the Sun - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canticle_of_the_Sun

Brother Sun, Sister Moon show the power of and love of God.

The body is not the enemy of the soul but the cell or closet of the soul, a place to be enclosed to find God, the tabernacle of God, St Paul

Each person has a unique contribution, and Francis has an integrated view of humanity and grace.

Temper was mystical but spontaneous, and his spirituality developed in the world in the open rather than monastic.

He was very mortified, almost to a fault, but this he kept hidden and made him more human, not less.

This is a continuation of his series of homilies on Franciscan Spirituality - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNN151zTIO4&list=PLejh_e0-LN4xgMllKrzSasL2Hljd5BHom
