Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Apr 01, 2023, on how the example of Jesus' response to Caiaphas is the best response to corrupt leaders and bad governance in all times. This includes not reducing ourselves to their levels by not getting hateful and angry but by loving them and praying for their conversion.

Notes:

Caiaphas was head of the Sadducees, who were collaborators with Rome and were the priests of the temple and denied many doctrines about the spiritual life. They were rather domineering and rejected all but the first five books of the Old Testament.

Caiaphas's goal was peace, power, and comfort, especially for himself and his fellow Sadducees.

In his declaration that one man should die for the people and thus accurately prophecies

John 11: 49-50

Do not need to be a saint to be a prophet

By doing this, he undid all he wanted, bringing about the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

Jesus is in control, not Caiaphas.

Thus we can rest that God is always in control. Bad leaders can cause misery, their own and for others, but God's plans will not be thwarted.

We should hate the sin of leaders and even hat those but not the person or the office

Also, a good response is praying that bad leaders will be converted.

The secular world needs to see our example of faith, hope, and charity
