Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Mar 16, 2023, on how St. Francis' spirituality is laser-focused on respect for the Church and its priests and bishops as he fulfills his mission of rebuilding the Church.

Notes:

Based on Fr. Hilarin Felder, 1867-1951 - The ideals of St. Francis of Assisi https://archive.org/details/idealsofstfranci0000feld/mode/2up

Church needed reform in Francis's time.

But many pseudo-reformers stepped forward, Cathars, Waldensians, some similar to Franciscans, mendicants, but they all became hardened in their heresy and anti-Church mentality.

Francis was called by God to rebuild and had great respect for the Church and the clergy. This is the high and hard road.

He also honored the eucharist in a way never done before, and this was the source of his respect for priests

has a great love for the beauty of the Church

Admonished his friars to have great respect for priests

Let God fix the clergy, respect them and we will win them over

Francis had respect and was friends with his bishop and with the pope

Forbade his friars from preaching in dioceses where the Bishop did not give permission

Friars should be humble before bishops and priests, friars minor

Admonish friars to stay close to the Church

This is compared with the self-righteous spirit of some of the pseudo-reformers of our days.

Franciscan Rule starts with respect for the Church and ends the same way

We must be obedient to the Church

Francis was unique in his strong and frequent admonitions to obey and respect the Church.

Ave Maria!
