Franciscan Spirituality #11: Sources, Part 1 – Mar 07 – Homily – Fr Terrance
Views 314
Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Mar 07, 2023, on how St Francis did not have the spiritual learning that many other great reformers had but had a more direct connection to the Holy Spirit, which he continually submitted to Church authority for approval. This is a continuation of his series on Franciscan Spirituality.
Spirituality is the coming together of Human and Divine activity. St. Francis's sources emphasized the divine, Holy Spirit, and less of the human.
Direct inspiration of God but very humble submission to the Church, starting with the Bishop of Assisi
Then went to Pope Innocent III, who had a mystical dream that this small, despised man would hold up the Church.
God kept making clear to him what he should do, as a knight in Spoletto was told to turn back to Assisi, at San Damiano ... "Francis Rebuild my Church"
He wanted to start doing itinerant preaching, but monks did not do this, so before he did his new way, he asked Br. Sylvester and St. Clare to pray for him.
Mt Laverna received the stigmata directly from the Crucified Christ.
He always listened when he felt the stirring of the Holy Spirit and this transformed him into another Christ.
God's grace comes first and is superior to our free will, but it works with our free will. Grace builds on our human nature.
