The Life of Sts. Berard & 4 Companions, First Franciscan Martyrs (d. 1220) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Jan 16. These first Franciscan martyrs preached in Seville in Muslim held Spain , they were condemned to death but then allowed to go on to Morocco and preached again. Exiled and escaped and preached more times. In the desert they ran into the Moroccan army and miraculously caused a stream to appear to relieve the thirsty troops, but in the end they martyred them.

On zeal for the faith:
Hebrews 11:6, value your faith as we should and for others as well
Consider the sacrifices of martyrs like Berard and companions
The saints in heaven rejoice for such zealous witnesses

Reflection is on
