The Life of St. John Baptist Mary Vianney, Confessor, Third Order (d. 1859) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Aug 4. St. John Vianney was pastor of Ars, France who converted this lukewarm town into one of ardent love of Jesus through his own personal piety, the solemnity of his masses, preaching of virtues and vices, long hours in the confession, miraculous cures, and fostering Eucharistic adoration. He is the patron of parish priests.
Reflection is on Pastoral duty, the need to be good shepherds protecting and leading the sheep. This involves praying for the sheep and not discouraging them. It also requires the sheep to respond to the voice of their shepherd and pray for him.
