Ave Maria MeditationsI came that they might have life and have it more abundantly. (Jn 10:10)
This is eternal life that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ of you have sent. ( John 17:3)
“Eternal life” is not as some assume as only life after death, and in contrast of his present life, which is transient and not eternal. Eternal life is life itself, real life, which can also be lived in the present age and is no longer challenged by physical death. This is the point: to see “life” here and now, real life that can no longer be destroyed by anything or anyone,
This meaning of eternal life appears very clearly an account of the raising of Lazarus “He who believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die”, (Jn 11:25, 26). Because I live you live also, says Jesus to His disciples at the last supper from (Jn 14:19). And He thereby reveals once again that a distinguishing feature of the goals of the disciple of Jesus is the fact that he lives: beyond the mere fact of existing.
Pope Benedict XVI (excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth)
To note: Our eternal life started at the moment of our conception! But where we will spend the rest of our eternal life after our time on earth is over, well, that is the question.
