At 23 St Charles was made governor of the Papal States by his uncle the Pope. Later put in charge of the diocese of Milan although not yet ordained a priest. He was eventually ordained and consecrated a bishop and worked to educate the clergy and reform monasteries. He survived an assassination attempt and spent his wealth feeding the poor during a famine.
