AveMaria Meditations

From the writings of THE HOLY FATHER ST. FRANCIS.

The Lord gave to me, Brother Francis, thus to begin to do penance; for when I was in sin it seemed to me very bitter to see lepers, and the Lord Himself led me amongst them and I showed mercy to them. And when I left them, that which had seemed to me bitter was changed for me into sweetness of body and soul. And afterwards I remained a little and I left the world. And the Lord gave me so much  faith in churches that I would simply pray and say thus: “We adore Thee Lord Jesus Christ here and in all Thy churches which are in the whole world, and we bless Thee because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.”

After that the Lord gave me, and gives me, so much faith in priests who live according to the form of the holy Roman Church, on account of their order, that if they should persecute me, I would have recourse to them. And if I had as much wisdom as Solomon had, and if I should find poor priests of this world, I would not preach against their will in the parishes in which they live. And I desire to fear, love, and honor them and all others as my masters; and I do not wish to consider sin in them, for in them I see the Son of God and they are my masters. And I do (his because in this world, I see nothing corporally of the most high Son of God Himself except His most holy Body and Blood, which they receive and they alone administer to others. And I will that these most holy mysteries be honored and revered above all things and that they be placed in precious places. Wheresoever I find His most holy Names and written words in unseemly places, I wish to collect them, and I ask that they may be collected and put in a becoming place. And we ought to honor and venerate all theologians and those who minister to us the most holy Divine Words as those who minister to us spirit and life.

And when the Lord gave me some brothers, no one showed me what I ought to do, but the Most High Himself revealed to me that I should live according to the form of the holy Gospel. And I caused it to be written in few words and simply, and the Lord Pope confirmed it for me. And those who came to take this life upon themselves gave to the poor all that they might have and they  were content with one tunic, patched within and without, by those who wished, with a cord and breeches, and we wished for no more.

We clerics said the Office like other clerics; the laics said the Paternoster, and we remained in the churches willingly enough. And we were simple and subject to all. And I worked with my hands and I wish to work and I wish firmly that all the other brothers should work at some labor which is compatible with honesty. Let those who know not [how to work] learn, not through desire to receive the price of labor but for the sake of example and to repel idleness. And when the price of labor is not given to us,let us have recourse to the table of the Lord, begging alms from door to door.

The Lord revealed to me this salutation, that we should say: “The Lord give thee peace.” Let the brothers take care not to receive on any account churches, poor dwelling-places, and all other things  that are constructed for them, unless they are as is becoming the holy poverty which we have promised in the Rule, always dwelling there as strangers and pilgrims…

And whoever shall observe these things may he be filled in heaven with the blessing of the Most High Father and may he be filled on earth with blessing of His Beloved Son together with the Holy Ghost, the Paraclete, and all the Powers of heaven and all the saints. And I, Brother Francis, your little one and servant, in so far as I am able, I confirm to you within and without, this most holy blessing. Amen.

Our Lady found this unworthy lukewarm person and obtained for her the grace to enter the Third Order of the Franciscans of the Immaculate. May this person spend all eternity in showing her gratitude.

    Letra: São Francisco

Dolce è sentire come nel mio cuore
    ora umilmente sta nascendo amore
Dolce è capire che non son più solo
ma che son parte di una immensa vita
Che generosa risplende intorno a me
Dono di Lui del Suo immenso amore
Ci ha dato il Cielo e le chiare Stelle
    Fratello Sole e Sorella Luna
La Madre Terra con Frutti, Prati e Fiori
il Fuoco, il Vento l’Aria e l’Acqua pura
fonte di Vita per le Sue Creature
Dono di Lui del suo immenso amore

    Alex,

Friars, who are true to their Franciscan charism, do not listen to music, watch television, … they are called to leave the things of the world (detachment) to follow Christ.
God bless those are really living like St Francis.

    Ave Maria!

  • Alex Antunes says:

    Marie,

I’m not sure if the Franciscan Friars are forbidden to listening music or to watch videos or films.

Why do I say that? I say that because there is difference between the monastic life’s style (estilo de vida monástico) or monastic life and other kinds of religious life.

I have been stayed in some monastaries doing (making) reatreats, as possible monastic vocation. (but I don´t have vocation to monastic life, althoug I admire it.) I know by myself like it is within a monastery.

Anyway, the Franciscan Friars are not monks in the strick sense, are they?

However, the fact of the Friars have published this videos don’t mean that they have broken their reatreat (recolhimento) or austere life.

After all, their mission is spread god things like theses videos too!

I just like to say one thing else. Honesty, I don’t see any problem in listening to music. Some kinds of music are highlly recomended, are very good for the spirit.

See how many beautiful kinds of sacred musics there are and how good they are to the souls. (A boa música faz um grande bem à alma.)

The good music raise the souls to God. (A boa música eleva a alma até Deus).

  • Alex Antunes says:

Correction: spread GOOD things and NOT god things. It was a typing error.

  • Alex Antunes says:

See, for exemple, Pie Jesus sung by Hayley Westenra. This kind of music is divine, elevate the soul to God.

    Lyrics

Pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu
    Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem
Pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu
    Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem
Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei
    Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem

    [Chorus]
    Dona eis requiem

    Dona eis requiem

    Alex,

Perhaps you should contact Father Elias. He is located at the Bloomington, Indiana friary. He can answer your questions on how the Franciscans of the Immaculate should be living their consecrated lives to Jesus and Mary.
He’s one of the holiest, Franciscan/Marian priests I know. The other one is Father Angelo Geiger. He is presently living in England. He is sanctifying himself with the work he was told to do.

    Arrivederci, ‘Alex’. Ave Maria!

  • Alex Antunes says:

    Marie,

I’m not Italian. I am Brazilian. And my real name is Alex really. Many Brazilian mothers like my mother likes naming their children with English names, specially American names, because Holyhood movies. Some brazilian comidians like making jokes with that. They say that is a thing of poor people (coisa de pobre). Not always, but it is true in certain way, because rich people prefer tradicional names, like José, Alexandre, Pedro, Antônio, etc.

I’ would like to have vocation to priesthood or religious life, but I feel liking get married. I want to get married. But I am poor and the women from my hometown are very materialist!!!

Anyway, I would like to email Fr. Elias or Fr. Angelo. What are their emails?

If they wanted or anyonese, they/you can conct me through my facebook:

    Sr. JosephMary,

I just sent a message to Fr. Jacinto.

    Ave Maria!

  • Marie says:

    Alex,

I’m amazed. You can read, “The True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary” in Portugese, (See your Sept. 24th post), understand music in Italian, and you are a poor Brazilian man, as you say.
    You are very blessed.

One doesn’t become a religious because he can not find a wife in his hometown. One becomes a religious because he wants to give his entire life over to God; to spend himself in the service of Jesus and Mary.
I hope the Immaculate makes your vocation clear to you.

    By the way, I’m Italian.

    Ave Maria!

  • Alex Antunes says:

Oh, Marie! What a great surprise! For many years, I had as confessor a Italian priest. He was very cultured and pius.
