Thank you for the well explained catechesis on indulgences. There are far too few teachings on them.
There is one question that I have not had found sufficiently clarified. What does not having attachment to venial sin mean? It seems it could mean either not having venial sin on our soul or not having a persistent habit to such sin. Would you say it is correct to teach that it is the former rather than the latter? It would be quite difficult to obtain if we needed not have a habit towards venial sin.
Dear Bill,
A person may have an actual venial sin on their soul and still obtain a plenary indulgence.
Being attached to a sin means that I’m unwilling to give it up, or to struggle against it. My heart is not detached, nor firmly resolved to avoid it. This says nothing about my success or failure in the struggle, but has to do with my interior dispositions. The question is: am I truly 100% in God’s service, or am I consciously holding on to a fault, not trying to root out the bad habit, satisfied and content that it is not grave enough to condemn me.
Dear Fra Joseph,
I was recently having a discussion about this with some catechists. They will be very grateful for your clarification as am I.
Pax Christi et Mariae,
Bill
